about

As Van Heumen and Van Veenendaal draw us into their sonic domain, they immediately assert their sophisticated and well-developed improvising relationship. We are met with what appears, at points, to be a seamless integration of the acoustic and the electronic, resulting in a joyous ambiguity of a musical world that seems to present itself as a single unified entity. Glitchy repeated notes fool us into believing that they have been produced on the piano, until we are unsure as to whether we have just heard the piano interject, or not. Carefully selected preparations along with live sampling techniques twist, transpose and transform the commonplace instrument, and lead us through a constantly evolving exploration of various auditory realms.

But despite the tight alliance that is quickly formed within this album, the clear, distinct voice of each performer comes through in the deliciously crisp and gesturally-sensitive digital world of Van Heumen, and the deliberate tensions, releases and imagery created by Van Veenendaal. But above of all, we do not need to consider the technique and mastery displayed here in order to fully absorb this piece of work. The music itself will transport the listener through states both mechanical yet expressive; percussive and rhythmical, yet ambient and delicate; and human, yet cetacean.
